Culture of Disrespect

Tuesday, April 26th, 2005

Solotude talks about his experience with police brutality. He cuts through all the BS and get to the heart of the matter.

So the straight dope on police brutality is the dope. That narcotic called disrespect. And this is problem keeps falling like dominos. Some people say we need more religion to fix this. Some say we need better political leaders to fix this. I say we all need to be seriously proactive in evaluating how we treat each other and the ramifications of treating someone like ****. And if you don’t care about this issue, there’s always someone out there that will make you care.

The latest Thing in Spyware: Longhorn

Tuesday, April 26th, 2005

C|Net reports that the next version of Windows will have a “black box” that will record data and send it back to Redmond in the event of system crash.

SEATTLE–In a move that could rankle privacy advocates, Microsoft said Monday that it is adding the PC equivalent of a flight data recorder to the next version of Windows, in an effort to better understand and prevent computer crashes.

The tool will build on the existing Watson error-reporting tool in Windows but will provide Microsoft with much deeper information, including what programs were running at the time of the error and even the contents of documents that were being created.

Definition: Any program that runs in the background collecting data about my PC, its applications, data, files, or user inputs is called Spyware.

All of these “convenience” features, allowing a MS CSR have remote access to your computer, sending data to Microsoft when my system crashes. All this is doing is adding complexity to an already complex system and juicy target for crackers to exploit. (Remember complexity is where crackers live.) The whole idea behind cracking is find the weakness that is not obvious. Given the “treasure trove” of information a cracker could get if he where successful is enough incentive for them to start working on an exploit as soon as he can get his hands on some code.

Market Pulse: Verizon offering ‘naked DSL’ in Northeast
Monday April 18, 1:04 pm ET
By Jeffry Bartash

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Verizon Communications said Monday that it will now allow customers in the Northeast who already gets its phone and high-speed Internet service to drop or switch the voice service but keep their DSL. Customers could rely on wireless or Internet-calling plans — supplied by Verizon or its rivals — for their local phone service. Standalone high-speed Internet service, known as “naked DSL,” will not be available right away to Verizon customers outside the old Nynex and Bell Atlantic territories, the company said. Eventually, naked DSL will be expanded to all of Verizon’s territory to all potential subscribers, regardless of whether they are a current customer, the company said.

Verizon sees the hand writing on the wall. Local phone service is see much competition from VOIP, and cellular which the just can not compete on price. People will start to abandon traditional phone service all together. But at least this way Verizon has a chance to stay in the mix.

Update:
FYI

Telecommunications giant Verizon has been forced to break some bad news to customers - they cannot simply drop their phone service while keeping Verizon DSL. Instead, subscribers can port their number to another telephone service provider.

Hope for Enterprise ?

Friday, April 15th, 2005

TrekUnited and a Canadian Production company are try to persuade Paramount to allow ST:Enterprise to be made in Canada. Where not only prescription drugs but film & TV production is cheaper.

The TrekUnited fan campaign several weeks ago teamed up with a Canadian group of film production companies who have proposed a plan to Paramount to keep Star Trek: Enterprise going for a fifth season, it told TrekToday.

According to documents provided by TrekUnited, since the start of the campaign it has been contacted by several companies who believed they had found the secret to making a profit out of Enterprise, for instance by using new distribution methods or finding new sponsorship opportunities. Eventually, TrekUnited decided to work with a Canadian group consisting of several entertainment companies who have produced a number of major motion pictures over the past several years. This group offered a plan by which Enterprise would be able to continue on TV, either on UPN or on another network that might be interested.

Short story. Probably won’t happen. Too bad. It was just getting Good.

TCB Logo

I’m sayin’ !!!

Pretty substantial broo ha ha going on. It all started when The Conservative Brotherhood enlarged its borders to add some new members. The story got picked up on wizbang, pretty substial conservative blog. The post itself was very matter of fact, but it did state that TCB where a group of Black Conservative bloggers. Of course you KNOW what happened next.

“How come these bloggers are SEGREGATING themselves”.
“What if I started a WHITE ONLY bloggers group.”
“This is RACISM !!”

Yadda Yadda Yadda. I can’t get into the TCB either but you don’t hear crying about it. I am not really of the same political persuaison, but at lest there sre SOME black people out doin it. Sometimes black people need to be with black people. I never thought that that would be such a hard concept to understand in America, given American history. Of course we don’t study History anymore.

Where I have been

Monday, April 11th, 2005

In the physical sense I have been right here. But As you can see I have not posted any content a LONG while. With good reason. Having a life other than my blog I have had to attend to it. But I have not left to blog altogether. In you might have noticed the new “look & feel” I have also been working on a plugin to combat the referrer spam I have been getting. Its not quite there and I currently testing a newer (hopefully) better version.

I noticed that I was on a couple of people’s blog rolls I and that has not gone unappreciated. I also noticed that some of yall took me off. So ….

<begging> Please put me back on. I am not done blogging yet and I promise to try to put more content out there. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give me another chance </begging>
