Monday, August 1st, 2005While on my little hiatus, my site was being hit by some pretty persistent spammers. I tried role my own anti spam plugins, but NOTHING I have done can compare to the combination of Spam Karma 2 and Spam Nuke SK2 has reduced the amount of spam that gets through to ZERO.
SK2 is a serious spam fighting plugin that is it self extensible itself though SK plugins. It come with a set of default plugins when activated are pretty much ALL you will need. The plugins rate each comment and add or subtract karma points depending on what the plugin is looking for. One of the plugins checks a Real time Black Lists (RBL) that contains domains and IP addresses that are known spammers. AND if the new spammer is discovered it updates these lists with the IP and domain.
As great as it is, SK2 is not perfect though. The interface is a little complicated and not as user friendly as I would like. Also management of the spam is not as complete as I would like to see either. Spam management, to review and make final decision about comments and trackbacks marked as spam, is lacking also. This is what makes Spam Nuke necessary. It simply displays a page listing you spam and allows you to redeem anything that was wrongly marked as spam, or delete it. There is even a button to “Nuke em. Nuke em all!” which permanently deletes spam comments from your database.
You know I actually enjoy spam now. I actually get a thrill seeing what spam didn’t get through SK2. After installing this plugin and I checked in the next morning to see how well it worked. I yelled at my screen. “” You get a weird sense of satisfaction like watching bugs get electrocuted in the bug zapper.
