Safari users victims of phishing

PayPal to Safari users: ‘Ditch it’
While current browser share estimates for Apple’s Safari web browser hover somewhere in the 4.5 percent range, Safari is attracting some unwanted attention from PayPal, the eBay-owned payment company. PayPal is urging its users to ditch Safari and instead use alternative browsers such as Internet Explorer 7, IE 8, Firefox 2, Firefox 3, or even Opera.

This I feel is unfair to Safari. The problem here is not that the browser is particularly insecure, but lacks the capability to check URLs against phishing databases, which is not a core function of browsers, in my opinion, but it is an important one. Camino, another Mozilla browser for Mac, also has this problem. Switching to Firefox, or Opera, is the prefered way to handle this problem.

You could also, if you know what you are doing, update the DNS settings in your network config, to use opendns, when you browser reaches out to find the IP of an URL open DNS will sheck ti against its database of phishing sites. This should work in most cases except where the host in link is given as IP. The browser won’t do a DNS lookup in that case. Even if you are using a firefox an other browser that provides phishing protection, I still think you should you openDNS as your primary DNS. There are a host of benefits to doing this, add prhish protection, I mentioned, as well blocking of porn and adult sites(if you like), faster dnslookup which wil increase the over all net web experience.

Google Browser Sync
This is a tool that I have wanted since I FIRST started surfing the World Wide Web. Had I been a better PC hacker I probably would have built it myself. Why this feature has slipped by browser makers for SOOOOOO many years is beyond me.

UPDATE
I spoke to soon on this one. The syncing takes TOOO long. I have never completed a syncing successfully. Just hit the cancel button. Google does warn you about this. Most Google betas are good enough for most people to use. This one is not.

Firefox breaks up a couple — REALLY

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006

The death of a relationship is recorded, on of all places, bugzilla. The bug tracking site for the mozilla foundation, the non profit that make firefox and other really cool open source apps. This just underscores how much “incriminating” information is on our PCs. In this case the evidence of a finance’s infidelity was just in the password manager. What if Google Desktop was installed. That app is almost scary. I chatting on AIM(link) with one guy about something, and googled the topic we where discussing, and it came back with the chat log for the conversation I was STILL HAVING.

There are 2 morals:

  1. Gervase Markham @ Hacking For Christ has the first:
Secretes will be revealed eventually. Lies will be found out eventually. Deceptions will be undone eventually. We will all get what we deserve eventually.
  2. Be paranoid and proactive about computer security:
Dude could still enjoying both getting his cake and eating it, if simply took the time to understand how his browser works and how to safe guard his personal information. (This does not mitigate moral # 1. Boy friend would have eventually y slipped up and been found out by girl friend eventually)

Spell check in Firefox !!

Wednesday, January 26th, 2005

Reading this blog you might have already guessed. I am the worst speller on the face of the planet. Add to this fact that I am the worst typist in the world. AND I am no prone to proof reading It makes for some pretty embarrassing mistakes. Writing a blog only exposes my weakness to the whole world especially since almost NO blogs have spell checking built in. I am always writing posts in Word spell checking it and then pasting back to the my blog, or where ever I am posting too.

There is no need for that anymore Spellbound is browser extension for firefox. You simply download the plugin and the dictionary of you choice. It automatically installs. All you have to do is just restart your browser and voila! (French word may not be in my dictionary). Now on any text entry right click and select check spelling!

Now my blog will at least look as intelligent as I really am, or in the very least not look as dumb ;-)
