Target and other stores have a problem with a simple solution. They can not compete with Amazon on price. They simple don’t have the over head of running thousands of stores all over the country. They have an advantage that. Amazon simple doesn’t have. The shopper is sitting in the sore with his hands on the product. MAKE A DEAL!. I bet in most cases they wouldn’t even have to meet Amazon’s price. If they can get a little off and have it RIGHT NOW is HUGE!

Even better keep selling the Kindle, but every time someone seems interested, in one, offer and on the spot unadvertised discount for a competitor’s product. Use Kindles to sell IPads. Home sellers have been doing this for EVER. You notice an open house one week end and that is exactly when your yard sign goes up.

Basically it comes down to Target forgetting how to sell. If you have an interested buy IN YOUR STORE, with the product IN HIS HAND, and you can’t figure out a away for him to leave with it, then YOU ARE THE WORST SALESMAN IN THE WORLD.

Someday Linux will no longer be an afterthought. Even to companies that rely so heavily on Linux for their products and internal processes.

The Google Drive launch has been one of the big announcements of the week, but it was a fairly unequivocal disappointment for one vocal category of users: Linux users are justifiably miffed that the new cloud storage service doesnt support the free and open source operating system.

Unacceptable Apple

Apple, and it customers have been trying to deal with there latest and greatest security threat, know as the Flashback malware. Apple has finally released tool to identify and remove the malware from a system … for Lion users ONLY:

In its ongoing battle to clean up the Flashback malware mess, Apple has now released a standalone removal tool.

The downloadable utility is available exclusively for Mac owners running OS X Lion. It will not run on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or earlier versions.

A description and download link are available here. The accompanying security bulletin says “This update is recommended for all OS X Lion users without Java installed.”

It is bad enough that because Apple controls it update process so much so tightly that when 3rd party security updates are released that they are not pushed to users in a more timely fashion. But when a fix is made available it is ONLY available those running the very latest major release of OS X even when ALL releases of OS X that care Java are effected. Just me but I think that if you are going to spend money software security support should be available to at least the last 2 major releases. Just sayin’

When Legislators attack … the Internet

There are those who think that Net Neutrality, is a government takeover of the Internet, when it is actually reasonable regulation that preserves how the Internet works today. If one wants an example of a Government take over of the Internet … Google SOPA and PROTECT IP. These are disgusting set of laws that will give government and large media companies direct control of the DNS system in order to block users from accessing sites that are thought of being places of piracy, as well as having their payment accounts canceled. I really can’t do this topic justice but please watch the below video. It explains it better than me.

You might remember that the guys from AisleFinder.com released a service that exposes thier data to all who want to use it. Well I build a simple API to uses this service. It is written in Java under the LGPL licence, so feel free to use it in your own projects. The source is hosted on google code and a jar file is available as well.

RIP John McCarthy the father of LISP and modern AI

The American scientist invented the computer language LISP.

It went on to become the programming language of choice for the AI community, and is still used today.

Professor McCarthy is also credited with coining the term “Artificial Intelligence” in 1955 when he detailed plans for the first Dartmouth conference. The brainstorming sessions helped focus early AI research.
